Three steps from a surprise bill to a steady one

The order matters: you cannot trim what you cannot see, and you should not commit before trimming.

The reality

Six reasons cloud bills get out of hand

Cloud makes it easy to start spending and hard to see where it goes.

01

AI and GPU costs

Experiments with models and GPUs can double a bill in a month.

What we doSet budgets and alerts on AI workloads, and shut down what is not in use.
02

Leadership wants proof

Someone is asking what the cloud spend actually buys.

What we doBreak costs down by product and team, so spend maps to outcomes.
03

The easy savings are gone

A clean-up last year helped, and then the bill grew again.

What we doMove from one-off clean-ups to a monthly routine with owners.
04

Invoices with no owner

Resources belong to a team that left, or to nobody.

What we doTag everything, assign owners and review untagged spend monthly.
05

Overspend found late

You learn about a spike when the invoice arrives.

What we doBudgets, forecasts and anomaly alerts that warn you within days.
06

Spend outside the cloud bill

Licences, SaaS and support contracts sit outside the cloud invoice.

What we doInclude them in the same view, so you see the whole picture.
Why FinOps

What good cost management looks like

FinOps is a way of working, not a one-time clean-up.

Visibility

Every cost is tied to a team, a product and an environment.

Savings without slowing teams

Changes are tested and reversible, so engineers keep shipping.

Forecasting

Budgets and forecasts finance can plan around.

Accountability

Owners see their own costs and act on them.

Continuous waste removal

Idle resources found every month, not once a year.

A cost-aware culture

Engineers think about cost when they design, not after.

One-off clean-up or FinOps?

What we cover

Five areas of cloud cost work

Use them together for a full programme, or pick the one that hurts most.

Visibility and allocation

Know who spends what.

  • A tagging scheme that people follow
  • Costs split by product, team and environment
  • Showback or chargeback reports
  • Untagged spend reviewed monthly

How it works

Five stages, following the FinOps cycle

The FinOps Foundation describes three phases: inform, optimize and operate. Our five stages cover all three.

  1. 1

    Assess

A read-only look at what you spend and why.

    What happens
    • Review the last months of bills
    • Find idle and oversized resources
    • Check tagging and commitments
    You get
    • A spend breakdown
    • A list of quick wins
    • A scorecard
    Your part

    Give read-only billing access.

    Safety net

    Read-only. We change nothing.

  2. 2

    Implement

Put visibility and guardrails in place.

    What happens
    • Tagging and cost allocation
    • Budgets and alerts
    • Dashboards by owner
    You get
    • Costs by team and product
    • Alerts to the right people
    • A baseline
    Your part

    Agree owners and tag rules.

    Safety net

    Additive changes only.

  3. 3

    Optimize

Remove waste and use commitments wisely.

    What happens
    • Right-size and clean up
    • Schedule non-production
    • Buy commitments for stable usage
    You get
    • A lower bill where waste was found
    • Reservations sized to usage
    • A log of changes
    Your part

    Approve each change window.

    Safety net

Tested in staging first, with a rollback ready.

  4. 4

    Govern

Make cost part of how teams work.

    What happens
    • Policies for tags and sizes
    • Cost checks in your pipeline
    • Review rhythm with owners
    You get
    • Written policies
    • Automated checks
    • A review calendar
    Your part

Nominate owners and attend the review.

    Safety net

Policies start as warnings before they block anything.

  5. 5

    Sustain

Keep the savings from drifting back.

    What happens
    • Monthly review
    • Quarterly commitment review
    • Anomaly follow-up
    You get
    • A monthly report
    • An updated scorecard
    • Next actions
    Your part

Read the report and act on recommendations.

    Safety net

You can run the routine yourselves at any time.

What can go wrong

Why FinOps programmes fail, and how we prevent it

Most fail because the savings do not last, or because something breaks.

Savings creep backA monthly review with owners, not a one-off report.
Dashboards nobody readsAlerts and a short monthly report sent to the people who can act.
Tags driftPolicies and automated checks that flag missing tags.
Commitments wastedCommit only to stable usage, and review coverage quarterly.
Production breaks after a cutStaging first, change windows you approve and a rollback.
Finance and engineering do not talkA shared view and a regular review that includes both.

Every change is reversible, and nothing is cut without your approval.

Ways to work with us

Four ways to start

Most clients begin with the review.

Cloud bill review

A read-only review of your bills with a spend breakdown, a list of waste and a ranked set of actions. Yours to keep.

Good for: Finding out what is possible

Fixed-scope project

A clear scope, timeline and price for a defined piece of work.

Good for: A specific goal

Hourly

Fixes, audits and short tasks, billed by the hour.

Good for: Small or urgent jobs

Dedicated engineer or team

Part-time or full-time engineers working inside your tools, by the month.

Good for: Ongoing work and support
Where this fits

Cost optimization in the wider journey

It is strongest when it follows a migration and sits next to managed operations.

FAQ

Cloud cost optimization and FinOps: common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

Ask a question
What is FinOps?

A practice that brings finance, engineering and the business together to manage cloud spend. It follows three phases: see what you spend, optimize it, and operate with ongoing control.

What is cloud cost optimization?

Reducing what you pay for the cloud without hurting what it delivers: removing waste, matching capacity to demand and using discounts such as reservations and savings plans.

How is FinOps different from a one-off clean-up?

A clean-up removes visible waste once. FinOps adds ownership, budgets and a monthly routine, so savings stay.

How much can we save?

It depends on how your cloud is run today. We do not promise a percentage up front. The bill review shows what is possible and how confident we are.

How quickly will we see results?

Quick wins such as idle resources can show up in the next bill. Commitments and habits take a few months to pay off.

Will cost changes affect production?

We test changes in staging first, apply them in windows you approve and keep a rollback ready.

Do you cover AWS, Azure and Google Cloud?

Yes. We use the native tools of each, and Azure-specific items such as Hybrid Benefit are included.

Would moving to the cloud save us money?

Sometimes. It depends on what you run today. Our migration assessment compares your current cost with the cloud before you decide.

What is tagging and chargeback?

Tags label each resource with an owner or product. Showback reports the cost back to each team; chargeback bills it internally.

What will we receive each month?

A short report on spend, savings, open actions and the forecast, with a scorecard.

What access do you need?

Read-only billing and cost access for the review. Changes are made only with your approval, and through roles you can see and revoke.

Can you manage the whole programme?

Yes. Many clients keep us on monthly for the routine, or hire a dedicated cloud engineer.
