Your path to the cloud

Three moves most migrations include

Most clients move more than one layer. Here is how a typical plan looks.

Your path to the cloud

Example
Hosting

Cloud serversRight-sized, in the region you choose
Application
One large applicationEach release is a risk
ContainersSmall, frequent releases
Database
A database on its own serverBackups nobody has tested

Why companies stay stuck

Six reasons a migration keeps getting postponed

Each one is solvable. These are the ones we hear most, and what we do about them.

01

A renewal is coming up

A hardware, data-centre or hosting contract is about to renew, and nobody wants to sign for another term.

What we doPlan the move around the renewal date, starting with what costs the most to keep.
02

Licence and hosting costs keep rising

Database and operating-system licences and fixed hosting fees grow every year.

What we doFind out what really needs a licence and move what does not to open-source or managed options.
03

Applications that are hard to change

One large application means every release is slow and risky.

What we doContainerize first, then split into services only where it pays off.
04

Databases nobody dares touch

A single server, no tested backup, and one person who knows how it works.

What we doMove to a managed database with backups and failover, rehearsed before the real cut-over.
05

Data nobody can use

Reports are built by hand from several systems and are out of date by the time they arrive.

What we doBuild a simple data pipeline and warehouse so the numbers update on their own.
06

Fear of downtime

The last attempt caused an outage, so the project stalled.

What we doMigrate in waves, rehearse each one, keep the old system until the new one is proven.
The business case

What you gain by moving

The benefits depend on what you move and how, so we put numbers on them in the assessment, not in a brochure.

Less hardware to own

No servers to refresh, rack or replace, and no capacity bought years ahead.

Fewer licence surprises

We map what really needs a licence, so you pay for fewer of them.

Faster releases

Containers and automated pipelines turn quarterly releases into routine ones.

Better resilience

Backups, failover and multiple zones are built in, and rehearsed.

Scale when you need it

Add capacity for a busy season and remove it afterwards.

Ready for analytics and AI

Your data lands somewhere it can be queried, reported on and used by models.

Migration strategies

The seven options for each application

Not everything should move the same way. We pick one of these for each workload, and explain why.

StrategyWhat it meansOften used when
RetireSwitch the system offNobody uses it any more
RetainLeave it where it is for nowA move is not worth the cost or risk yet
RehostMove it as it is to cloud serversYou need to leave a data centre quickly
RelocateMove virtual machines between platforms with little changeYou already run on VMware or a similar platform
ReplatformMove with small changes, such as a managed databaseA few changes bring big savings without a rewrite
RepurchaseReplace it with a SaaS productA standard product does the job better
RefactorRedesign it for the cloudThe application limits growth, and the value justifies the work
What we cover

Four ways forward

Pick one or combine them. Each comes with the native tools of the cloud you choose.

Cloud migration

Servers and virtual machines moved to AWS, Azure or Google Cloud in rehearsed waves.

  • Inventory and dependency mapping
  • Landing zone with networks, accounts and access rules
  • Rehearsal, cut-over and a tested rollback
  • Right-sizing from day one

How we work

Five stages, each with a safety net

Every stage ends with something you can review, and nothing changes in production without your approval.

  1. 1

    Assess

Find out what you run, what it costs and what depends on what. Read-only.

    What happens
    • Inventory servers, applications and databases
    • Map dependencies and traffic
    • Compare today's cost with the cloud
    You get
    • An inventory and dependency map
    • A strategy for each workload
    • A rough cost comparison
    Your part

Give read-only access and a person who knows the systems.

    Safety net

We change nothing in this stage.

  2. 2

    Plan

Choose the cloud, the order of moves and the way back.

    What happens
    • Choose the cloud and the region
    • Design the landing zone
    • Group workloads into waves
    You get
    • A written migration plan
    • Timeline and risks
    • A fixed-scope quote
    Your part

Approve the plan, the waves and the downtime windows.

    Safety net

The plan includes a rollback for every wave.

  3. 3

    Migrate

Move the first wave, learn from it, then move the rest.

    What happens
    • Build the landing zone
    • Rehearse the move on a copy
    • Cut over in the agreed window
    You get
    • Workloads running in the cloud
    • Test results for each wave
    • Updated runbooks
    Your part

Test the migrated systems and sign off each wave.

    Safety net

The old system stays untouched until the new one is proven.

  4. 4

    Modernize

Improve what was moved: containers, managed databases, automated releases.

    What happens
    • Containerize applications
    • Move databases to managed services
    • Add pipelines and monitoring
    You get
    • Faster, safer releases
    • Backups that have been tested
    • Dashboards and alerts
    Your part

Choose which applications are worth the effort.

    Safety net

Each change ships on its own and can be reversed.

  5. 5

    Run and optimize

Keep it healthy, secure and affordable after the move.

    What happens
    • Monitor and patch
    • Review the bill and right-size
    • Document everything
    You get
    • A monthly report
    • A cost review
    • Documentation for your team
    Your part

Decide whether to run it yourselves or keep us on monthly support.

    Safety net

Everything is in your accounts, so you can take over any time.

What can go wrong

Six migration risks, and how we prevent them

Most migrations that fail do so for a handful of predictable reasons.

Hidden dependenciesWe map traffic and connections during the assessment, before choosing waves.
Downtime during cut-overRehearse on a copy, agree a window, and keep the old system until the new one is proven.
Endless rewritesMove first, then modernize only what justifies the effort.
Data that does not match after the moveCompare source and target before cut-over, and again after.
The cloud bill creeps upRight-size at the start, and set budgets and alerts on day one.
Your team cannot run the new setupDocumentation and a walkthrough, or monthly support from us.

Every wave has a way back. If a check fails, we roll back and fix it, and nothing is lost.

FAQ

Cloud migration: common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

Ask a question
What are cloud migration services?

Planning and carrying out the move of servers, applications and databases from your own hardware, a data centre or a hosting provider to a public cloud such as AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, usually with some modernization on the way.

How long does a migration take?

It depends on how much you move and how tangled it is. A single application can take days to weeks; a whole estate takes months. The assessment gives you a timeline before you commit.

Will there be downtime?

We aim for as little as possible. We rehearse each move on a copy, agree a window with you and keep the old system running until the new one is proven.

Can we roll back if something goes wrong?

Yes. Every wave has a tested way back, and the source system is left untouched until you sign off.

Which cloud should we choose?

It depends on your team, your customers and your budget. We give a straight recommendation after the assessment, including when staying where you are is the better answer.

Do we have to rewrite our application?

No. Many applications move as they are, or with small changes. We only suggest a rewrite when the application limits the business and the value is clear.

What is the difference between migration and modernization?

Migration moves a workload to a new platform. Modernization changes the workload itself, for example into containers or a managed database, to get more from the new platform.

Can you reduce our database licence costs?

Often, yes. We check what really needs a licensed engine and move the rest to open-source or managed options such as PostgreSQL. Savings depend on your contracts, so we confirm them in the assessment.

Can our data stay in India?

Yes. We can choose Indian regions such as AWS Mumbai or Azure Central India, and set up access rules and encryption to match your requirements.

What does the assessment cost?

The first call is free. We then send a written plan and quote for the assessment itself, or fold it into a fixed-scope project.

Who owns the cloud accounts?

You do. We work inside your accounts, and the code and documentation are yours.

Do you support the system after the move?

Yes. Many clients keep us on monthly for monitoring, patching and cost reviews. See our managed cloud service.
